How do I conduct accreditation checks?

Updated: May 30

On the 1st January 2022 it became mandatory to complete an accreditation check as part of applications for airport identity cards and crew identity cards to allow access to the critical part of a UK airport. This is in addition to the existing background checks already required on these applications.

What are accreditation checks?

  • A new higher level of security check

  • Can only be conducted by the UK government

  • Accreditation checks can be requested through AirportGateway

What background checks do I need to complete to obtain an airside pass?

A standard background check which comprises of:

  • 5 year references and employment history check

  • Basic criminal record checks

  • Identity check

An Accreditation check (AC Check), which is undertaken by the UK Government

How do I complete these new checks?

To complete these checks manually you must first complete a background check, Identity check and Aviation Security training (GSAT) by collecting references, applying for criminal record checks and conducting Avsec training. You can then apply for the accreditation check via the UK Government, and manually check for updates on your application.

Alternatively, the background checking experts at IDGateway are the only company who can offer an end-to-end solution for these enhanced background checks. You are able to complete the initial background checks using VettingGateway, an easy-to-use platform that uses automated tools to allow you to complete the required checks all from one online platform. Once complete, VettingGateway has a one-click integration to AirportGateway, which is where you can apply directly to the UK Government for the accreditation check. Crucially, AirportGateway is able to provide total visibility on the status of your application.

Important Things to Remember when conducting Accreditation checks:

  1. The information you submit about your applicant MUST be accurate. Any errors will cause the accreditation check to be inadmissible and you will need to resubmit the application which will cause further delays

  2. Plan in advance: accreditation checks can take a minimum of 5 days to be returned

  3. You are unable to submit your application to the airport until the accreditation check has been granted

What else do I need to know?

We have created a short 5 minute video that provides more information on Accreditation Checks, and shows how you can complete them using AirportGateway.
